Run entirely by volunteers for almost twenty years, the Mountain Area Preservation Foundation's active membership consists of concerned citizens who live and own property in the Truckee Tahoe region. The Foundation works with the Town of Truckee, local government, developers and other partners to preserve natural areas and build a community that is sustainable, diverse and prosperous.
The Foundation has a history of success in protecting the Truckee Tahoe Region from inappropriate development, garnering funds for open space acquisition, and serving as an advocate for affordable housing. Among these successes:
- The Foundation and a coalition of environmental groups won a groundbreaking lawsuit against Placer County. In the decision, Judge James D. Garbolino concluded that the "Martis Valley itself is a critically important area for wildlife, habitat, and water resources" and that Placer County, in evaluating the potential impacts of its development plans, failed to meet the requirements of California planning law.
- The Foundation blocked K-Mart from developing a large store in Truckee.
- The Foundation won millions of dollars from a large development company building resort communities in Truckee, and has donated it to the Truckee Donner Land Trust to purchase natural areas in the region.
- The Foundation prevented the development of a large bottled water manufacturing facility in the Coldstream Canyon outdoor recreation area.
