Protect Open Space

Mountain Area Preservation seeks to protect open space in two ways.

  1. Within Truckee’s downtown core, we are working to create more open space in the form of parks and public gathering places that are linked by readily accessible pedestrian pathes and bikeways. Learn more
  2. On a regional level, our efforts are focused on protecting biologically sensitive land for the benefits of wildlife, watershed management and passive recreation like bicycling or hiking. Unlike our local land trust, we do not purchase land. Rather, we create opportunities for open space acquisitions by work ing with property owners, developers, local residents, skilled biologists and land use planners to identify the location of these biologically sensitive lands and assure they are not lost to develoment. …accumulating evidence indicates that open space conservation is not an expense but an investment that produces important economic benefits.
    – Will Rogers, President for The Trust for Public Land

An open space is an area of land that is not developed. Open space includes working landscapes, such as forestlands, farms, parks, greenways, trails, urban green spaces, historic areas, natural areas, scenic overlooks and wetlands. By advocating and protecting open space we are maintaining our quality of life for present and future generations.

Benefits of Open Space

Attract Investment

Parks and open space create a high quality of life that attracts tax-paying businesses and residents to communities. Open space and trails raises property value.

Revitalize Cities

Urban parks, gardens, and recreational open space stimulate commercial growth and promote inner-city revitalization.

Boost Tourism

Open space boosts local economies by attracting tourists and supporting outdoor recreation.

Prevent Flood Damage

Floodplain protection offers a cost-effective alternative to expensive flood-control measures.

Protect Farms and Ranches

Protecting agricultural lands safeguards the future of farming economies and communities.

Promote Sustainable Development

Open space preservation helps communities prevent the higher costs of unplanned development.

Promote Healthy Lifestyles

Nearly half of Americans get less than the recommended minimum amount of physical activity. Open space and parks play a critical role in helping residents and visitors get outside and become active.

Safeguard the Environment

Open space conservation is often the cheapest way to safeguard drinking water, clean the air, and achieve other environmental goals.
